Help Me Overcome My Unbelief!

Help Me Overcome My Unbelief!

There’s a story in the Bible about a father who is worried about his son. (Mark 9:14-29) His son had been sick since he was a young boy. Turns out that the son had an evil spirit possessing him. The father knows that his boy needs help but he hasn’t found anyone who can do anything to cure him. That is, until Jesus. The father said to Jesus, “But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”  “If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

I can relate to this father because I often feel like my faith just doesn’t quite measure up. I know that Jesus can do all things, but my flesh sees all my problems and worries and I begin to doubt that Jesus can help me out of my big mess.

The end of that story with the father and his son has the disciples asking Jesus why they weren’t able to heal the boy; why they couldn’t cast out the evil spirit. Jesus said that “this kind can come out only by prayer.”

So I’m reminded, once again, of the power of our prayers. If you’re going through tough times and you have worries, I’ve compiled a short list of scripture promises that have been helping me. I hope they help you too!

Psalm 34:17 :: The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.

Proverbs 3:5-6 :: Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Psalm 42:5 :: Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!

Philippians 4:19 :: And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Thanks Robert for posting and reminding the listeners that this was here. I am struggling too with my belief/faith/trust though He has showne countless times that I am not alone. Yet I seem to default to freakish out rather than relaxing in His arms. Ick!
These scriptures will help me get back to my Bible and get back on my knees.
Joyful His,
